Dr. Thompson completed her undergraduate education and medical school training at Duke University. From there she went on to complete residency training in two specialties, Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology, at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), while being selected as chief resident of both programs. In 2002, upon completion of a fellowship in adult and pediatric cardiothoracic anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University, she joined their faculty. She remained at Vanderbilt since that time, serving as Medical Director of the Preoperative Clinic for the past 10 years while also practicing cardiothoracic anesthesiology.

In addition to her active clinical practice, she has been engaged in writing about evidence-based decision support in clinical practice. Most recently, she has been a member of the Writing Committee for the 2014 ACC/AHA Guidelines on Perioperative Cardiovascular Evaluation and Management of Patients Undergoing Noncardiac Surgery.

Dr. Thompson’s other educational roles include being an Oral Examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and member of the National Board of Echocardiography Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography Exam Writing Committee. She has also been involved in the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) as co-chair for the Fellow Session at their Annual Meeting and as part of the Program Committee for the SCA Annual Echo Meeting.
