Anthony J. Senagore, M.D., is Professor and Vice Chair for Research at the Western Michigan University-Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine and is a staff colorectal surgeon at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, MI. He has previously served as Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Central Michigan University School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and Michigan State University-College of Human Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Michigan State University (MSU), East Lansing, MI. He completed his residency in General Surgery at the Butterworth Hospital/MSU program in Grand Rapis, MI. Dr. Senagore then completed a research fellowship and colon and rectal surgery residency at Ferguson Hospital on the Grand Rapids and East Lansing campuses of MSU. He continued his education and later received his Master of Science degree in physiology from MSU and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, San Francisco, CA campus.

Dr. Senagore is board certified in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery. He is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is a member of numerous organizations, including the Association for Academic Surgery, Central Surgical Association, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Midwest Surgical Association, International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. He is past President of both the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the Midwest Surgical Association. He served as an advisor to both the Relative Value Update Committee and the Practicing Physician Advisory Committee for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
While at the Cleveland Clinic was medical director in the Office of Medical Operations and associate chief of staff.

Dr. Senagore specializes in laparoscopic bowel resection, surgical management of Crohns Disease and Ulcerative colitis, sphincter preserving surgery for rectal cancer, treatment of anal incontinence and constipation, and management of anorectal disorders. Dr. Senagore was an early adopter of both laparoscopic colorectal surgery and enhanced recovery after surgery. Among his many clinical and research interests are: surgical innovations in laparoscopic bowel surgery; molecular and genetic changes in colorectal cancer and analgesic management; perioperative hyperglycemia and arginine dysregulation. He has lectured on various topics related to colon and rectal surgery nationally and internationally, edited 5 textbooks in colon and rectal surgery, authored over 240 peer-reviewed publications and 25 textbook chapters.
