Dr Joe Cosgrove MB BS, FRCA.

Dr Cosgrove graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1988 and began his career in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the then Sunderland General Hospital (now Sunderland Royal Hospitals) in 1991. Thanks to Sir Kenneth Calman and the Specialist Registrars Grade he completed his Anaesthesia and ICM training in the North-east of England which included a 12-month Fellowship in Newcastle, New South Wales under the auspices of Ross Kerridge.

He was appointed to his current post in 2000 where he is currently Critical Care Outreach Lead. He is also an Examiner for the Primary FRCA and a member of the CCrISP Steering Committee, RCS Eng. His research interests include perioperative cardiovascular optimisation, MEWS charts and education on the early recognition of acutely ill patients and the interaction between intensive care and primary care in advanced care planning for patients with chronic disease.

Other medical activity is as an Events Medicine Doctor for Durham County Cricket Club and Newcastle United FC plus adviser to the England and Wales Cricket Board on medical contingency and major incident planning for international cricket matches.
