Aged 50, qualified from St. Thomas' Hospital Medical School in 1984. Anaesthesia training in Nottingham and Leicester, where spent a period as British Journal of Anaesthesia Research Fellow investigating the effects of volatile anaesthetics on the cholinergic system.

I spent a year working with Ted Eger at UCSF doing research into inhalational convulsants before returning to an NHS consultant job in Peterborough. Involved in anaesthetic education, spent 6 years as RCA tutor and is currently a Primary FRCA examiner.

Main research interests are on anaesthesia for the elderly, especially fractured neck of femur. Still does 7 anaesthetic sessions a week from upper GI general surgery, elective orthopaedics and a whole day doing emergency anaesthesia. Describes himself as "an average Joe" DGH generalist.

I am a Council Member of AAGB&I, and founded the Hip Fracture Perioperative Network, formerly anaesthesia network. From the last meeting came the idea for the laparotomy network.
