John Myburgh

Professor John Myburgh MBBCh, PhD, FCICM is the Director of the Division of Critical Care and Trauma at the George Institute for Global Health and Professor of Critical Care at the University of New South Wales. He holds honorary Professorial appointments at Universities of Sydney and Monash.
He is a senior physician in the Department of Intensive Care Medicine at St George Hospital, Sydney.
He has been actively involved in intensive care research for the last 20 years. He was a foundation member and past Chair of the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group and has received over $45M in competitive research funding since 2000. He has recruited over 19000 patients into over 10 randomised-controlled trials, in the last 15 years and has published over 170 original articles, including 8 papers in the New England Journal of Medicine, and 45 book chapters. He was a chief investigator on the Saline vs Albumin Fluid Evaluation (SAFE) study, the SAFE-TBI study and led the Crystalloid vs Hydroxyethyl starch Trial (CHEST).
Current research interests include fluid resuscitation, catecholamine pharmacodynamics, traumatic brain injury, endocrine homeostasis and thermoregulation in critical illness.
In addition to his research activities, he has a long-standing involvement in education and is immediate Past-President of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand.
He is a current Council Member on the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine.
