Programme Highlights
The 2017 European Practicum on Clinical Exercise Testing and Interpretation (CPET) benefits from a combined faculty of internationally-recognised experts in cardiopulmonary exercise testing and, through the UK Perioperative Exercise Testing and Training Society (POETTS), experts in perioperative CPET.
This three-day course will provide a comprehensive introduction to the basic principles underlying the physiological basis of clinical CPET. This will allow participants to identify the indications for CPET and to manage the most common exercise protocols (i.e. incremental, constant work-rate) used in clinical, rehabilitation and prehabilitation settings. Participants will be able to familiarise themselves with the equipment and methodology involved in CPET and to undertake appropriate interpretation of the results.
Aims
- To provide a comprehensive understanding of the physiological basis of CPET
- To identify the indications for and the protocols used in CPET (i.e. incremental, constant work-rate)
- To discuss the clinical applications of CPET in lung and heart diseases, and in the perioperative setting
- To enable participants to understand the utility of CPET in the prescription and
- evaluation of rehabilitation and prehabilitation programmes
- To detail the emerging importance of CPET in the prognostic setting
Format
- Plenary sessions
- Lectures
- Interactive facilitated group learning sessions
- Laboratory sessions
- Case presentations and discussion
- Panel discussions
Topics
The course will cover practical aspects of clinical cardiopulmonary exercise testing with a focus on:
- Indications
- Protocols
- Measurements
- Data interpretation
- Prognosis and treatment
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will have an improved knowledge of:
- Indications for CPET
- CPET equipment, methodology and quality control
- Physiological significance of cardiopulmonary response profiles, in the context of incremental and constant work-rate exercise protocols
- Typical response profiles observed in patients with different cardio-respiratory diseases
- How to utilise CPET in the evaluation of rehabilitation and prehabilitation programmes
